There are some great boards for webmasters but there is not a general website discussion board.
I wanted to chat a couple of times about forums that dont really fall into a chat about a particular software or promotion or troublesome members etc. It was topics about all forums in general and there isnt that option.
The other General stuff seems to be more about non-website related stuff really.
Any chance of it to allow people to have general discussions about forums or webmaster things that dont fall into the other catergories you have going on??
Ok I will try and give some examples of what I mean by discussion that doesnt really have a very clear place to be and could cause some misplaced posts depending on peoples views of whether a certain board is suitable for the discussion or not.
Discussing other peoples boards (you have a review section but maybe the board owner doesnt want it reviewed but merely discussed about).
Discussing aspects of running a forum such as moderating, post content to allow/disallow, forum rules, legal stuff with forums, ideas on new forums, adding stuff like picture galleries/chatrooms/blogs to a forum and the stuff involved with that, what to make compulsory during registration, whether Guests should be allowed or not allowed, etc.
Discussion on what forums you regard as successful forums, Styles or themes that seem successful or particular subject matters or layouts that work (and ones that are not so successful), or forums you really like and want to point out and discuss how they made theirs work... a winning recipe so to speak, etc.
Discussion on where to find content or extras for your forum such as favicons, smilies, how many smilies are acceptable on a forum, should signatures be allowed, what about ranks and where do you get rank images, image hosting (photobucket) or host it yourself on your webspace, avatar sizes, what to have on a gallery if at all, etc.
I could go on forever really and I guess a lot of the above could be placed in one current forum or another if you wanted it to be but a lot of the above is grey area stuff, like asking for some decent ranks for a gaming forum (not images but actual titles etc) or hints and tips on running a forum that isnt just about problem members. It either has to be categorized into a current board which is sometimes difficult, or placed in the "Other Topics" board you have at present which is a shame as it is all Webmaster stuff and not really needing to be mixed in with TV shows and Celeb Gossip topics you got going on in there.
I just think that rather than see it as a General forum, it should be more like a Miscellaneous forum where the stuff that doesnt have a clear place to go can end up.
One of the examples I wanted to post but wasnt too sure which to post it in was about a forum on the Big List I saw. I wasnt actually going to name the forum but merely ask peoples thoughts on how "a forum" had 5000 members yet only 4000 posts, had a Page Rank of 0/10 and yet an Alexa rank of 108,000 and all while being "offline" when you visit it.
It was this sort of posting that doesnt really have anywhere to go, which after a lot of thinking it should go in the Review website (but i didnt want to review someones site without them putting it up for review nor me giving the site name anyway) I just gave up and didnt bother posting it in the end.
Anyway, just thought I would mention it as I think it would be useful for webmasters to have somewhere to discuss the obscure things that dont really fit into a specific category, nor does an obscure discussion need a category all by itself.
good stuff and thanks for posting all of that. I would say post any/all threads you are unsure of where should go here for now http://www.thebiggestboards.com/forums/forum32/ and then we will move around to the appropriate section as a new thread is started if needed.
