I run Smf 1.1.5 and have found that it is by far a very easy to use forum software. It is almost as easy to install a mod, as windows is to install software, in most cases you don't have to manually edit anything. I have installed 36 modifications. Out of those 36 I had to manually edit 2 of them. The features you can have with Smf almost seem endless, and it is free forum software. In the past I had always used Phpbb, but found Smf to be easier to use, and more features and mods for Smf. You can check out http://www.goodgoin.com to see Smf 1.1.5 in action.
You can download Smf and mods here- http://www.simplemachines.org
I used to use SMF (1.1.4) and loved it for its ease at adding MODS.
The reason a lot of people dont use it I think is the reputation it had when a LOT of SMF forums were attacked and hacked over a short space of time a year or two ago. People lost sites over it and SMF soon got a reputation as been bad for security.
I personally never had any problems with that and I have to say that all the MODS were brilliant.
Nice site there MADDOGRANGER - thanx for the post - I haven't heard much about SMF but it looks pretty decent. A few forums I frequent are running SMF - may look into it for a future endeavor. Thanx,
Hold off until SMF 2.0 is available. Its available now as RC3 I think. It has a lot more features available as standard rather than as MODS such as moderator reports/warnings etc that are standard in phpbb3 now.
I just started using SMF of one of my forums, I must say that the ease of installing mods is awesome. I haven't tried moving from one version to the next though, so I'm hoping that I will be able to easily install an update, without losing too many mods or having to edit much.
When you upgrade to a new version, it is the same as installing a MOD. All your old MODS should work fine once you upgrade (they always did for me) however make sure that any future Mods you add after an upgrade are compatible with the latest version (can take a few weeks for them all to convert).
Most of the converting of mods is a simple change of a line of code saying what the mod is now compatible with 1.1.#. Very simple if you know how.

SMF is what I use, but the mods are only great when they work with other mods. Sometimes the same set of mods only works when installed in a certain order. I have about 10 installed, and another 10 that I'd like to install, but I'll have to do it when i have the time to manually tweak them.
I like SMF better than PhpBB but I always got errors when installing modifications and themes so much, I left them and went to the better http://www.mybboard.net instead

I like SMF. I'm on there with my own site, Let's Just Talk. I like it because the ACP is really easy to use. It's easy to create forums and subforums. Check out the link to my site in my signature.
