How much weight do you place on dnScoop's evaluation of a domain?
I've got one that I have considered selling, they say it's worth 17,000 +. I don't consider it worth nearly that much. Is there any stats that have the ratio of dnScoop value to what it was sold for?
I have no idea how they come up with their sale amounts. They say TVandDINNER has a sale value of $10600. I would sell it RIGHT NOW for that amount if I could, lol
I would say it is a fun way of seeing how your site is progressing rather than a proper tool for evaluating it.
A website is only worth as much as its current revenue added to its future potential. If you have a great domain name, a unique idea and a rapidly growing audience then it is going to be worth a lot to someone. Alternatively any old domain name, a same old board as a million others and a slow growing audience is just as important if it is bringing in a large revenue through advertising or something.
The best way to look at selling your site is this. Are you basing it on what it makes NOW or what it could be worth to someone willing to invest in its future.
If you consider its worth now, Work out how much money it makes a month through whatever revenue streams (subscriptions, google adsense, merchandise, etc), then subtract how much the site is costing you (hosting costs, advertising, etc). If it is a negative figure then you wont expect much interest. If it is a positive figure and your making money from your site then its value to buyers has increased and to work out what to consider selling it for, take the monthly figure you came to and multiply it by 24 (2 years) and that is your approximate value of your "online business".
i.e- $100 a month revenue, $50 a month expenditure = $50 a month profit x 24 = A site that could in theory sell to an interested buyer for $1200
You could obtain more for it if there is also potential but it has to be a very clear potential rather than a "bit of advertising will bring more members" sort.
Potential of a site has to be likened to any other business in the world. If a Drinks Company were to sell up they wouldnt get more money for saying "With a bit of extra advertising you would sell more cola" as that is expected from a business and isnt true potential and therefore isnt worth any extra $$$ to the sale of the company. However, if the Drinks Company were to say "We have 3 brand new secret recipes that are about to be launched on the market" then the company has potential to become much bigger and suddenly its $$$ value is worth a lot more.
This same principle applies to your website. If you say "with a bit of advertising it will get more members" you are not going to increase your sale price. But by saying "We also own the .com, the .net, .org and .co.uk domains as well as PR of 7 and about to unleash a brand new feature never before seen on any forum we know off" your going to get interested parties frothing at the mouth and wanting to grab it quickly to an extent they will pay more $$$ to get it. Even if your site has only got 30 members and 3 posts a day.... if your site domain is called www. sexygirls. com it has huge potential for someone to buy it for a high price, rip your site out and stick in one with a good deal of advertising that will make them thousands of $$$$ a month. And that is where DNSCOOP fails because it can work out what your site is worth in terms of age and number of letters in a domain name and what its many ranks are worth, but it cant work out exactly what your making on paper each month, nor can it work out what potentials you have with your site to a developer looking to build on whatever fantastic feature you currently have they can see making them $$$$ if they had it.
So ask yourself this if your looking to sell....
What is it worth RIGHT NOW
Add to that what YOUR site is worth to anyone interested in developing it, has it got a great name that had a huge potential audience if the right site is built around it, or does it have something no other site has got?
THAT is what your site will be worth to people willing to pay. And DNSCOOP can only offer a fun and very flexible way off gauging how your site is currently doing, and making you feel a bit of a Bill Gates when the numbers increase each week!
