The fundamental understanding of Google™ PageRank™
According to Google, the PageRank given to a website suggests the website's importance, and is computed from sites linking to a page. For instance, if PAGE A has a text link to PAGE B then PAGE B will be ranked higher as PAGE A is "voting" for PAGE B. However, although it seems very straightforward, many different factors are considered while calculating the PageRank (see partial list below). The page casting the vote will also be scrutinized by Google.
Google analyzes the webpage that has the text link to another website and looks at several essential qualities of the webpage. For instance, one of the most beneficial quality is the PageRank of the webpage that has the link to another website. The higher the PageRank of the "linker", the higher the link will value. For example, if PAGE A has a PageRank of 5 and is linking to PAGE B. This link will be valued more as PAGE A has a high PageRank of 5. Whereas if PAGE A had a small PageRank of 2 then this link will not be valued as much. Another factor that is taken into consideration is the amount of links on a webpage. If PAGE A has only one link on the page, it will be valued much more than if it were to have five links on the page.
The Google PageRank is determined on the result of many factors. Some of the main ones are:
· Anchor text of inbound link to you · Site Map · Age of Link · keywords in anchor text · Popularity of referring page · Site Size - fewer pages preferred, due to proliferation of computer-generated pages · Number of outgoing links on referrer page · Site Theming · Position of link on referrer page · Page traffic - # of visitors, trend · Keyword density on referring page · Page Selection Rate - How often is a page clicked on? · HTML title of referrer page · Time spent on page · Link from "Expert" site? · Did user Bookmark page? · Referrer page - Same theme · Bookmark add/ removal frequency · Referrer page - Different theme · How they left, where they went · Site listed in DMOZ Directory? · Site Traffic · DMOZ category? · Referrer - Authoritative referrer? · Site listed in Yahoo Directory? · Keyword - Keyword searches used to find you · Site listed in LookSmart Directory? · Time spent on domain · Site listed in inktomi? · Domain Registration Time -Register for 5 years, Google knows you are serious. · Site listed in other directories (About, etc.) · Are associated sites legitimate? · Site Age · Prior Site Ranking · Site Directory - Tree Structure · Any many many more factors...
