Interesting question. At the moment I am not doing much marketing at all really - I'm depending on Google and other search engines to send traffic basically and it's been nice. Once you get a lot of content on your site and the content is indexed in the search engines - it's good for business - I'd say the best marketing begins with SEO

Jacquii.
I completely agree with you that search engine is the best way to market a site, one still need to encourage them to come to one's site though and doing that is a form of marketing as well
Yep. There was a time early on in JPiC that I did use a bit of a questionable means of marketing ((blush)) -- It was a few years back - I searched for different phpbb poetry forums. A lot of them made their Members email address available to the public - So I did swipe some of the email address and sent my promotional invites:
It was a bit of work composing/coding the html invites and such and putting the graphics together. Some would say that it was a bit of a sordid method to get Members - but hey - I was just putting the word out
Another marketing method is to put together a 3 or 4 paragraph press release that you can post on different forums and on different sites that allow for such releases. There's a lot of work that goes into it - but if you're serious about making your forum a success - then it's all worth it in the end.
You shouldn't focus 100% on search engines. I get a lot of traffic from search engines but it's not the best quality traffic. Think of when you're searching for something on google. I usually click on one link, skim through the page and if i don't see what i'm looking for, i leave and go to a different site. I rarely ever go back to the site regardless of if I find what I'm looking for or not.
Another way I get traffic is by writing articles for my site, waiting till it gets indexed and then submitting it to article sites such as ehow.com I'll compare ehow and google so you can see the difference.
In the last 30 days:
ehow - 542 visitors
google - 1832 visitors
yes that's a huge difference, but keep reading...
ehow - 5.48 pages/vistor = 2970 page views
google - 1.78 pages/visitor = 3260 page views
now you can see that the traffic i get from both sources are a bit more equal.
ehow - 4:28 average time on site
google - 1:04
ehow - 19% bounce rate
google - 80%
page views are about equal but traffic coming from article sites stay longer, view more pages and don't leave right away. which visitor is more likely to provide revenue for my site?
Google is a good source of traffic but my point is that you shouldn't just rely on search engines. There are much better forms of traffic out there if you look.
Hmmm - quite interesting actually and I agree - It's why my very 1st JPiC affiliate site is http://ArticleGalleryOnline.com --- There are tons of articles on every topic under the sun... And a lot (if not all) the pages are indexed in google and other search engines. On each article is a ling to my Forum - pretty nice eh!
Link building is the best way to increase website traffic. Do on-page and off-page optimization. you can do directories submission, social bookmarking, Article, Press Release, Blog Creation and Participating in lot of forums, Google & Yahoo Groups, and Commenting on other blogs.....Use all of these free techniques to increase traffic to your website
I agree that marketing begins with SEO and in addition Social Media Optimization is another way of marketing that can help you get traffic when you are starting and doesn't have rankings yet in search engine.
