What process do they have to go through in order to get to be a moderator?
On my forum, it goes like this..
How to become a moderator?
The choice of moderators is delicate because they are the guarantors of the balance of the community. Moderators must also have good analytical ability and interpersonal skills, so as not to rush members.
For example, moderators are selected by the admin, depending on their seniority, their beneficial activity for the site and their relationship.
This means that it is unnecessary to apply to become a moderator.
However, in order to be chosen as moderator, it must be an active member on the forum and ideally an active contributor.
I usually hire from within my own forums and I tell them from the outset what is expected. I also tell them if they dont` come up to scratch, I`ll take them round the back and shoot `em.
Nope - I don't hire Moderators - Couldn't afford to if I wanted - But luckily I have a great team of Ladies who volunteer their time to make sure JPiC continues to run smoothely --- I actually have a Moderator application process any Member can fill out - It's nice - below is the list of questions any potential applicant will have to answer for Moderator consideration:
Why do you feel you'd be a nice addition to the JPiC Moderating Team?
What would you bring to the role of JPiC Moderator which currently doesn't exist?
How would you go about promoting forum participation and activity in the sub-forums you'll moderate?
How would you go about promoting forum participation and activity for the JPiC Community as a whole?
In your opinion: What are the current positives of JPiC Forum For Writers? (please be specific)
In your opinion: What are the current negatives of JPiC Forum For Writers? (again - please be specific)
Why should the Administrator choose you as part of the Moderating Team ahead of other applicants?
Please add any additional comments here...

It works pretty well actually and makes the job of selecting potential Moderators so much easier.
I used to hire from within, but soon learnt that i prefer to have control over the moderating myself and not have to deal with people with bad tempers or having off days. I soon found I was the only unbiased professional one on the site staff.
So now I do everything via reports. The report buttons all send reports to me and i moderate them. So the only staff I have got is ME!
That is a good thing if you are extremely active but when you get bigger, you may have a greater need for extra help so that you do not get overwhelmed and burnt out because of it.
When I 1st started JPiC - it was only me - but I soon realized that it would be a HUGE task to moderate each single post being posted and keeping out the spam and updating to newest versions, etc all by myself -- So - I sought out potential Moderators and it's been good really - the JPiC Moderating Team is a talented group of Ladies who are just as passionate about literature as I am.
That's the key - you have to find someone from within that has the same passion about your forum niche that you have. Then sailing should be smooth as newborn glass
Yeah. I agree in finding someone as interested in your BB's topic as you are. So many times I have had staff that new nothing about the topic, those type are usually egotistic and want power ;) but not all the time
I offer them online chat sex and they fight like starving post-Armageddon tribal units struggling to obtain the last scrap of fresh meat on the planet. I have a waiting list of 14 women just for one Supermod position on one site alone.

You're a weirdow! Which makes me like ya as a friend even more
At IGI, the admins stay out of moderating but all the staff members have a say in who the moderators are. I've seen moderators at forums act like total pricks. I came from WWGHA where the moderators would ban someone simply if they were in a bad mood, while letting abusive members off the hook for just about anything. At another forum, there was a strange guy who people didn't like and the admin accused him of being a pedophile just for an excuse to ban him. Moderators need to be intelligent and be people of integrity, or the forum's management will just be a joke.
Avoid giving them out until you literally are snowed under with work that your site is suffering with poor moderation. Otherwise you could rush in too quickly giving out positions to the wrong people and a lack of moderating for the moderators can cause a few of them to get lazy and not even bother.
Interesting thing about running a website and the need for staff.... Plentyoffish.com is one of the biggest free online dating sites in the world and he ran the site and its several million members single handed for 5 years before relenting and taking on a few selected staff.
The site looks a load of turd and desperately needs a flashy cosmetic update but it is interesting how far someone can go singlehanded if they wanted to.

So do you or anyone happen know what a mod can make?
